What do people actually remember about you after you're gone? Not your job title. Tracy Hooper shares a leadership lesson from a college reunion's "Memory Room" that every executive should hear. A few months ago, Henry and I attended his 50th college reunion, a full weekend of reconnecting with classmates, catching up on decades of stories, and even a few lectures from university faculty. But what stayed with me most was something the reunion organizers built called The Memory Room: a small space filled with photos and reflections honoring classmates who had passed away. Out of a class of 1,250 people, 143 are gone. All weekend, people moved quietly through that room, sharing stories about the impact those classmates had on them. Nobody talked about job titles, promotions, or resumes. They talked about kindness. Integrity. Generosity. Creativity. Tenacity. Resilience. The ability to listen deeply and make people feel respected and valued. Those are the same qualities that define real executive presence and authentic leadership, whether you're leading a team, a company, or just showing up for the people around you. They're also qualities that will never appear on a LinkedIn profile. In this video, I share what The Memory Room taught me about legacy, leadership, and what actually makes someone unforgettable. What does a mild concussion have to do with leadership? Tracy Hooper shares the ER reminder that changed how she leads, communicates, and hits send. One morning a few months ago, I woke up, skipped my glass of water, and headed straight for the bathroom. The next thing I knew, I was on the bedroom rug, flat on my back, dazed. Henry, a lifelong athlete and coach, went into concussion protocol: "What day is it? Who's our governor?" I couldn't answer. A few minutes later, in the car on the way to the ER, my brain came back online. At the ER, the doctors were kind and thorough. Diagnosis: a mild concussion, I'd stood up too fast, and I was dehydrated. It reminded me of advice my doctor gave me years ago at a routine appointment: "Tracy, don't be in a hurry." I've repeated that advice to other people for years, and clearly I needed to hear it again myself, because this isn't only about rushing out of bed. It's about how we live and how we lead. In business, speed gets rewarded, and all of us feel that pressure. We hit send too fast on a tense email, tap reply-all before asking who needs the information, skip spellcheck to beat a deadline, or text the wrong Sam. We speak before we've fully listened, react before we have the full picture, form opinions too fast. When we hurry, we miss what matters. We overlook details, jump to conclusions, skim instead of reading the full document, react when it would be kinder and more patient to respond. None of those habits build trust or confidence, not in ourselves and not in the people counting on us. The most confident people I know are not the fastest people in the room. They're intentional. They think before they speak, ask better questions, prepare, and pause before pressing send on any device. Slowing down is not a weakness. It's a leadership and life skill. For the next 30 days, don't be in a hurry to reply when it's emotional, to speak before you have the facts, to judge what you don't fully understand, or to press send. Take a breath. Take a beat. Take your time. And drink your water. This video is part of The Confidence Project's monthly video series on workplace confidence, communication, and executive presence. How do confident leaders manage the microphone when a speaker won't stop talking? Tracy Hooper breaks down the skill every panel moderator and event host needs. There's a moment nearly every leader faces, especially on stage: you ask a thoughtful question, and the speaker keeps talking, and talking. A client recently asked me about this while preparing for a large awards ceremony, 25 honorees, one question each, a 30-second response, and a tight timeline to keep the event on track. She asked, "How can I manage the mic?" When someone starts to ramble, many leaders freeze. They don't want to interrupt or seem rude, so they wait, hoping the person will bring it in for a landing, which rarely happens. This reminds me of legendary sports broadcaster Jim Nantz. After the Baltimore Ravens won Super Bowl XLVII, Nantz interviewed linebacker Ray Lewis, who was fired up and tried to grab the microphone away from him on national television. Jim held on. He later said, "When you give up the mic, you give up the network." As a former TV news reporter, I lived by that same rule. You never give up the microphone during an interview, and that lesson applies directly to leadership. The microphone represents responsibility and respect: respect for time, for the audience, and for everyone else waiting for their moment. Confident leaders don't hand over the microphone. They manage it. You hold it, you listen, and then you step in at the right time and say things like, "Thank you for that insight," or "That's a powerful message, congratulations," or "We need more people like you in our community, bravo." Then you close and move on. That's not rude. That's leadership. Your job is to acknowledge the speaker, honor the audience, and keep the program moving. The next time you're leading a meeting, guiding a conversation, or moderating a panel with a microphone in your hand, remember: don't give up the mic. When you manage the microphone, you manage the moment, and that's what confident leaders do. Is "you guys" quietly excluding half the people in the room? Tracy Hooper breaks down why this common phrase undermines inclusive leadership and shares exactly what to say instead. Hi you guys. I'm glad you guys are watching this video. When you're finished, let me know what you guys think. What's wrong with those sentences? Not everybody watching this is a guy. Some people say, "Tracy, don't be so sensitive, it's just an expression, it's so normalized nobody even hears it anymore." That's true. And words have power. For several years I was part of a women's leadership program. Nearly 100 women gathered monthly to hear speakers and network, and almost every time, the leader would say things like "Thanks for being here, you guys" or "What do you guys think?" There were no guys in the room. Not one. This isn't just a corporate habit, it's cultural. At the 2026 Academy Awards, Autumn Durald Arkapaw made history as the first woman to win the Oscar for Best Cinematography. She asked all the women in the room to stand because, in her words, "I wouldn't be here without you guys." Every person standing was a woman. That's how embedded "you guys" is. When language becomes automatic, it becomes invisible. And when it's invisible, it's easy to overlook who it leaves out, in this case, half the population. So pay attention to who's in the room, and if it's not all men, lose "you guys." Even unintentional language can exclude people, and that matters if you want to build trust, credibility, and connection. Here are the words to use instead: - Each of you - You both - All of you - Everyone - Everybody here - You all - Team - Colleagues - For a more formal presentation: distinguished guests You work hard to build trust. Don't let one casual phrase undermine it. When your language evolves, your leadership does too. That builds confidence. What's the difference between courage and confidence? Tracy Hooper explores the question after a hike in Sedona left her deciding exactly how far was far enough. Last month, Henry and I were in Sedona, Arizona, hiking the Red Rock trails with his college roommate. Our daughter Kathleen had warned me that Cathedral Rock gets steep and narrow near the top, with a crevice to climb through. Halfway up, we passed an 88-year-old man who told me, "You can do it, girl. Don't be scared. Be courageous." I thought, if he can do it, I can do it. But as the trail got steeper and the hand-over-hand climbing began, I thought, I don't want to do this. A couple of years ago I slipped on ice and broke my wrist, and since then I've been highly motivated to stay upright. So I stopped, took in the view, and decided, this is high enough for me. A few days later, I had coffee with a woman I admire, a highly respected executive who makes big decisions regularly. When I described my hiking dilemma, she said, "Part of being confident is knowing when to say no. Not pushing yourself to prove something. Confidence is knowing yourself well enough to decide what's right for you." That clarified something for me. Courage isn't just physical. It's speaking up when you disagree, starting a business, having a difficult conversation, saying "I'm sorry" when you've made a mistake. Courage is often the first step. Confidence grows from taking that step, and the one after it. Confidence is a verb: take action, make mistakes, adjust, refine, repeat. Confidence also means wisdom, knowing your limits and what's right for you. Sometimes courage says keep climbing. Sometimes confidence says this is high enough for me. For the next 30 days, pay attention to the moments when you're deciding whether to push forward or pause. Ask yourself: where is courage calling me to step up, and where is confidence giving me permission to say this is high enough? Real confidence isn't about proving something. It's about knowing yourself well enough to choose wisely. This video is part of The Confidence Project's monthly video series on workplace confidence, communication, and executive presence. The best leaders read the room before they ever open their mouth. Tracy Hooper learned that lesson from an unlikely teacher: her Lyft driver. What you'll learn in this video: Why "reading the room" matters more than having the perfect message How top performers adjust in real time based on subtle cues A simple habit that improves how people respond to you, at work and everywhere else A few years ago, I climbed into a Lyft on my way to an important meeting. Hair and makeup done, dressed for the part, my grandmother's vintage pin on my coat, laptop bag in hand. I was ready. My driver, Matt, said hello, and I got to work reviewing my notes. A few minutes in, I realized the music had changed. Hard rock when I got in, now classical. I smiled, it was calming. And I wondered if that was intentional. So I asked him. Turns out Matt has four playlists: Classical, Jazz, Alternative, and Country (he calls it "Charlie"). Early on, he'd ask riders what they wanted to hear, and almost everyone said the same thing: "I like everything" or "I don't care." So he stopped asking. Now he reads his passenger, where they're headed, how they're dressed, the vibe, and picks the music himself. I asked if it worked. Five-star ratings. Tips doubled. Here's the leadership lesson: Matt wasn't playing what he liked. He was reading his customer before a single word was exchanged. That's exactly what effective leaders do. You may have an agenda, a point to make, a message to deliver. But if you don't read the room first, that message may not land. Are people on time or trickling in? Engaged or distracted? What is their body language telling you? Communication doesn't begin when you speak. It begins when you notice. Real confidence isn't about knowing all the answers. Tracy Hooper shares how a weekly family tradition called "Friday Finance" taught her that confidence comes from asking questions, not avoiding them. What you'll learn in this video: Why confident people ask more questions, not fewer How to reframe "I don't know" into a strength instead of a weakness Simple phrases to use when you need to ask for help without apologizing for it Years ago, when our three daughters were heading off to college, one by one, my husband, Henry, made one academic request. "I don't care what you major in," he said. "Just promise me you'll take one business course. Finance. Accounting. Economics. You choose it, but take something to help you understand how business works." They all promised. Three college graduations later, guess how many of our daughters took that class? Zero. Every excuse in the book: couldn't get in, waitlist, didn't fit the schedule, business majors only. To his credit, Henry didn't push. But once early careers hit, along with uneven paychecks, surprise taxes, and skimpy retirement accounts, our girls started noticing the gap between what they knew and what they needed to know. That's when the phone rang. Five years later, our middle daughter, Eleanor, called. "Dad, remember that business class you wanted me to take? I need it now. I want to save, start investing, stick to a budget." Henry, who has an MBA and over 30 years in business, was thrilled. "Let's talk business," he said. So they started meeting every Friday morning before he went to work. Then Kathleen joined. Then Margaret. Then me, because I have FOMO. Six years later, across three time zones, we still meet every Friday for what we call Friday Finance. Interest rates, Roth IRAs, 401(k)s, the stock market, crypto, inflation, whatever's relevant that week. Visiting friends and family become guest speakers. Everyone who hears about it asks the same thing: "Can I join?" Here's what I've realized. Friday Finance was never really about finance. It's about having the confidence to admit there's something you don't know yet. I've met smart, capable professionals who stay quiet in meetings because they think they should already have the answer, so they just hope they'll figure it out eventually. Confident people do the opposite. They raise their hands. They stay curious, and they don't apologize for it. Instead of "Sorry, I don't know," they say, "I have a question about that," or "Is now a good time for questions?" So what's the one skill you want to learn? AI? Investing? Public speaking? Leadership? Stop saying "I should already know this." Start saying, "I'm ready to learn this." Confidence isn't about having all the answers. It's trusting that someone will walk alongside you while you ask the questions. And if you're a leader, be that person. The one who says, "Good question, let's learn it together." That's the real lesson behind Friday Finance. This video is part of The Confidence Project's monthly video series on workplace confidence, communication, and executive presence. What would you say if someone handed you a microphone right now? Tracy Hooper shares a lesson she learned the hard way about being prepared to speak with confidence, even when you aren't expecting to be called on. Whether you're speaking at a business meeting, introducing a client, recognizing a colleague, or attending a celebration, a little preparation can help you communicate with greater confidence when the unexpected happens. What you'll learn in this video: - How to prepare for unexpected public speaking moments without writing a full speech - Why having one point, one story, or one message ready can make you a more confident speaker - A simple question to ask yourself before an important meeting, event, or celebration VIDEO TRANSCRIPT: A few years ago, my business coach, Mark LeBlanc, celebrated his 40th year in business. His first book, “Growing Your Business,” is a must-read & he’s logged more than 20-thousan hours coaching independent business owners, like I am. Mark invited his clients from all over the country to Minneapolis to celebrate his anniversary. My associate, Mary Nienow and I flew in from Portland because Mark has had a tremendous impact on the success of The Confidence Project. On the plane, I thought, “Should I prepare something to say about Mark?” And then I thought, “No, the invitation didn't mention “toasts” or “roasts.” So, I don't need to do that.” Big mistake. That evening, after a lovely dinner, the emcee stood up and said, “Mark is thrilled you're here. We have 85 clients and family and friends from across the U.S. celebrating Mark. So, if any of you would like to say a few words about working with him, please come up.” And I thought, “Oh, Tracy. You should have followed your instincts.” I could have prepared a story about Mark or shared a classic “LeBlancian” piece of advice that everyone in the room would recognize because we’ve all heard it as his clients! I got in line behind five other people, thank goodness because it gave me a few minutes to figure out what I was going to say. When it was my turn, I took the microphone, held it properly, shared my gaze around the room, and said something about Mark that was completely forgettable. Complimentary, sincere, and appropriate. But forgettable. And, as I handed the mic to the next person and walked back to my seat, all the good ideas came to me. “I should have said this. I could have told that story. Why didn't I mention Mark’s most memorable quote? ‘No change means no change.’” Here's what I learned: Always be ready to speak. You never know when someone is going to ask you to stand up and say a few words about a project you're leading, an idea you have, a colleague you want to recognize, a client you're introducing, or someone who's being celebrated. You don't need to write a speech. But when have a key meeting, or an event, or a celebration coming up, take the time to ask yourself, “If someone handed me the microphone, what would I want to say?” Think of one point. One Story. One message. Because sometimes the mic comes your way, when you least expect it. Write it. Practice it & be ready to speak …with confidence. Thank you for reading.
